Stupid car…

Friday, January 18th, 2008

“Hey dad, remember our car?”
“Mhmmm… Wait, what do you mean remember!?”
-Calvin and Hobbes strip

Yes, its true. On monday we dropped my car off at the mechanic to have it checked out as it appeared to be losing oil, but wasn’t visibly leaking. Instead it turns out that it blew a headgasket and is essentially fried. I’m not really certain when or how it happened, the mechanic had some theory about a gas bubble forming around the thermostat so that the car overheated without showing any visible sign. It may last the rest of the winter without seizing up because of the cold weather, but by the summer I’ll have to buy a new one. It could have happened because of some residual damage from the previous owner, but I’ll never really know…

So much for buying used cars :(

  1. I’m with you there!!!! We went out to Utah for a Regional Qualifier with some friends. On the way home from their house after the tournament, our car’s radiator hose sprang a leak somehow. THEN, this week, the batter AND/OR alternator decided it was going to die. So every time I turn off the car, I have to get someone to jump me… Unless it’s been sitting in the garage all night… THEN it is fine!!!!

So I feel your pain. Thanks for your comment on my blog. I think we all live in leaky boats. I think it’s God’s way of having us trust Him. He’s so good!!!!!

  2. By the way, your former partner (the last year you did debate) judged my sister and I yesterday. That was the most awesome round we have had all season! Everyone was cracking jokes and making the stupidest analogies… It was great!!!! You should come judge some time. I’ll get you info the next time there’s a tourney in your area.

  3. It sounds like you had fun with Jonathan in that round, I wish I could have seen it! I really want to come judge at some tournaments, but I just couldn’t miss a day of school this week for Credo :(

  4. Yeah, we did. I totally understand not wanting to miss school, especially just for a round robin that you’re judging at. We had Friday off because our teachers had to have some meeting. Pretty sweet… (Pardon my grammar, btw: Jonathan judged my sister and me… :P ) I’ll keep you up to date on tournaments so you can judge. It’d be great to have you and other alumni judge us!!!

  5. Thanks Allegra, that would be awesome if you could :)

  6. Sad, Connor. But then, it could happen to even a new car, if the car got old enough. Accept my best wishes for your search, come summer.

  7. That’s really sad, Connor. :-( Maybe you should go Japanese next time. ;-)

  8. I was sitting in front of the computer…doing all the things I usually do…and it dawned on me…Hey, I haven’t been to Connor’s blog in ages! So here I am. :)

Yuck. I see Allegra has been filling everyone in about our car troubles. They’re really that bad, and they’re really that frustrating. it makes me glad our dad knows about cars….

And Mark – Japanese =/= reliable. It does = cheap. ;)

  9. Oh…duh… I am sorry your car broke down, Connor. There are times when life’s like that. ::frowns::

  10. sighs that was me. Sorry. Again. ::quits being annoying::

  11. Me = very confused…

Who commented what back there? :P

  12. This is Allegra. I guess it’s the cookies on our computers that do it or something, but Lydia and I can comment interchangeably, using each others’ identities. It’s pretty cool. :D

I is sorry Connor = very confused. :P But hopefully now it all makes sense.

Oh, and Mark, Lydia and I can gang up on you next time. I’m sure Connor and Nate would be willing to back us up on this, but Japanese cars =/= good cars. They ARE cheap, and perhaps good for first cars, but I like good old American cars. We really shouldn’t have a debate on Connor’s website, though. Although it might be rather entertaining….

  13. Sorry Connor, I didn’t mean to confuse you. Cookies on our computer + me forgetting to change my title = Connor’s confusion.

    :D

  14. Lol, Japanese cars are not cheap, they are more expensive than American. There are some American cars that look cool, but if want any kind of well made car you need Japanese. But what do teenagers really know about the quality of cars?

Just glance at the best and worst used cars to get. Mostly Japanese and foreign on the best list and american on the worst list.

There is no reason to get a different kind of car as your “first,” Allegra. If anything you should go American first so you can lear how to fix cars and then be amazed at the luxury of not having to fix them when you get Japanese.

  15. Connor has been excommunicated from his own website. How sad. Connor, maybe you should update. :D Then we can find something else to argue about. :P Ah, debaters…
