FaceBlock – Safari Facebook Ad Blocker

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

I have stopped maintaining this plugin as Facebook made some changes to their page layouts that made it very difficult to remove the advertising. I recommend AdBlock for Safari or Facebook Cleaner instead.

For quite some time, the most popular post on this site has been my user stylesheet for blocking facebook ads. With the release of Safari 5 yesterday, I finally have a more elegant way of implementing this blocking system, extension. Introducing:

FaceBlock

FaceBlock will remove the sidebar ads on the Facebook homepage, as well as the ads on user profiles.

To install, you will first need to enable extensions, since for some reason they are disabled by default.

  1. Go to Preferences -> Advanced and enable the develop menu.
  2. Close preferences and then click on Develop -> Enable Extensions.
  3. Download FaceBlock.

Enable Extensions

Goodbye ads!

Update 1.1: I’ve added rules to block ads in several other areas of the site. Hopefully Safari’s automatic update system actually works since I haven’t been able to test it. If anyone could let me know if the update shows up automatically I’d appreciate it!

  10. This does not appear to work as described. Sponsored ads still appear on various Facebook pages (e.g. when selecting a sub-set of Friends to view). Restarting Safari has no impact.

  27. Just a word of warning. It appears that Safari isn’t remembering extensions that have been installed. I started Safari just now and none of the extensions I installed yesterday were still there. I redownloaded this one and installed it again. I suggest folks keep the extension files handy for when they have to do the same.

    No more facebook ads!

    Great job.

  45. Safari auto-updated to 1.1. Awesome extension, Well done!

  46. you guys are AWESOME!!!

  47. Doesn’t work for me. Tried installing it several times, with/without Safari restarts. Ads are still there. Installed AdBlock, set up a specific rule just for the facebook.com domain, and works like a charm. I don’t doubt it works for some, but clearly there is something wrong (isn’t it as simple as setting a stylesheet rule for the rightCol?) that makes this a flakey extension.

    Sorry.

  48. Doesn’t seem to work everywhere. Ads in a photo page are still there… :S

  49. Worked for a few days, but now ads are back.

  50. I have finally figured out what was wrong with the updating, and added some new rules that eliminate all the ads I can find. FaceBlock should update automatically, let me know if anyone sees ads anywhere that I missed.

  51. Works great for blocking ads, but it’s also removed my Facebook bookmarks on the upper right, when I’m playing a game or something. Is there a way to fix this or what?

  52. It works actually.Been looking for something like this a long time. Those annoying ads is not appreciated..

    Thanks!

  54. After I remembered to double-click the extension to install, worked!

  55. Perfect…Thanks!

  56. Great extension! Wondering what happened to it in the Extensions Gallery on Apple? It is no longer listed, but there are several other FB ad blockers there. Is FaceBlock version 1.2 the most recent available? Did it change names to something else?

    Thanks!

  57. Facebook has officially moved all pages to the new layout as of today (13 january 2011) and your FaceBlock Extensions seems to block almost all ads everywhere, something not accomplished with any other Facebook Ad Blocker I have tried. The only page I find where ads are not being blocked is on the Edit Friends page. If you update the FaceBlock Extension to fix that, please send me and email to update the Extension and I will check it for you.

  58. Update to previous post: Photos of You page is also displaying ads with your extension.

  59. It worked once, but once I go to another page, the ads are back.

  60. today 28/01/2010 with facebook messages update it seems that faceblock doesn’t work anymore :-(

that’s a great extension! please fix it :-)

  61. Love it! Works well.
I’m a big fan of simple, so I have room for the important stuff. (Makes Facebook on my little netbook running Ubuntu look great!) Thanks!

  62. Thank You!!!!
    WoW!!! it works so well.
At last I’m not getting badgered by those stupid Ads.
Thank you for taking the time to help.

  63. it does not work for me :(

  64. For those of you who can’t get this extension to work anymore, I’ve created similar extension that does the same job.

  65. Final link works on Safari 5 where all others I tried failed. Many thanks
