FaceBlock – Safari Facebook Ad Blocker
Tuesday, June 8th, 2010For quite some time, the most popular post on this site has been my user stylesheet for blocking facebook ads. With the release of Safari 5 yesterday, I finally have a more elegant way of implementing this blocking system, extension. Introducing:
FaceBlock
FaceBlock will remove the sidebar ads on the Facebook homepage, as well as the ads on user profiles.
To install, you will first need to enable extensions, since for some reason they are disabled by default.
- Go to Preferences -> Advanced and enable the develop menu.
- Close preferences and then click on Develop -> Enable Extensions.
- Download FaceBlock.

Goodbye ads!
Update 1.1: I’ve added rules to block ads in several other areas of the site. Hopefully Safari’s automatic update system actually works since I haven’t been able to test it. If anyone could let me know if the update shows up automatically I’d appreciate it!

Works great for me, thanks!
Doesn’t work for me. I enabled extensions, downloaded and installed this extension; and even after a restart of Safari, I still see ads.
ADORE IT
AWESOME! I have wanted this for SOOOO long! Thanks a billion!
Works as advertised…sweet! Thanks!
Great success!
AWESOME! Thank you sooooo much!
I followed your instructions and VOILA, no more annoying “Ya Betcha! Sarah Palin” ads.
THANK YOU.
Sweet. Nicely done! Cheers
This does not appear to work as described. Sponsored ads still appear on various Facebook pages (e.g. when selecting a sub-set of Friends to view). Restarting Safari has no impact.

works half. On my friends’ pages are still commercials..
Excellent. Never paid attention to them anyway. I wonder how long it will take FB to try and overcome your genius. Great job.

Just a word of warning. It appears that Safari isn’t remembering extensions that have been installed. I started Safari just now and none of the extensions I installed yesterday were still there. I redownloaded this one and installed it again. I suggest folks keep the extension files handy for when they have to do the same.
Brilliant job – love it!

Just love it!
No more facebook ads!
Great job.
Safari auto-updated to 1.1. Awesome extension, Well done!
you guys are AWESOME!!!
Doesn’t work for me. Tried installing it several times, with/without Safari restarts. Ads are still there. Installed AdBlock, set up a specific rule just for the facebook.com domain, and works like a charm. I don’t doubt it works for some, but clearly there is something wrong (isn’t it as simple as setting a stylesheet rule for the rightCol?) that makes this a flakey extension.
Sorry.
Doesn’t seem to work everywhere. Ads in a photo page are still there… :S
Worked for a few days, but now ads are back.
I have finally figured out what was wrong with the updating, and added some new rules that eliminate all the ads I can find. FaceBlock should update automatically, let me know if anyone sees ads anywhere that I missed.
Works great for blocking ads, but it’s also removed my Facebook bookmarks on the upper right, when I’m playing a game or something. Is there a way to fix this or what?
It works actually.Been looking for something like this a long time. Those annoying ads is not appreciated..
Thanks!
