YouTube5 Update – HTML5 Anywhere

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

The first update to YouTube5 has just been released! It includes several new features and bugfixes. First of all, the extension will now work on YouTube videos embedded anywhere, not just on YouTube.com.

Also, the occasional issue that would cause a video not to load has been fixed, and a graphical indicator is now shown instead of just a black rectangle while the video is loading.

Hopefully the extension will update itself automatically for most users, but if it doesn’t you can download the updated extension manually.

Update 1.2.5 The issue with the new YouTube video URLs has been fixed.

  1. Wow. I was thoroughly impressed when I first used this plugin! Just what I’ve always wanted :)

However…… is there any way to turn the preloading off for non-YouTube sites?

It preloads every clip, even when I have no interest in watching a particular video (e.g. on a blog page that is full of videos), so it’s chewing up bandwidth for something I may or may not watch. It’s a real pain on a page that’s full of YouTube clips. For now I’ll probably just have to stop using the extension, which is sad.

Anyhow, keep up the good work! I look forward to future updates.

  2. Excellent point, I’ve updated the extension to disable preloading except on YouTube.com.

  3. Looking at the generated code, it seems like the only thing that can’t be extracted from Youtube’s embed-code is the t-variable. Would you mind explaining how to get this one? It would be cool to provide the HTML5 player to other browsers with support for it as well.

  4. Jeriko, I’ll be releasing the source soon, so feel free to port it to other browsers. In brief, what I do is load the actual YouTube video page using XHR, and scrape the ticket number and the available formats off that page with a couple regular expressions.

  5. I can’t grab the update, seems the download link is busted?

    Thanks for the fix!

  6. Link is death!!!

  7. I’m having the same problem as Marcel – can’t download the extension. I get:

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [no address given] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

  8. It’s a very nice extension, beats the crap out of the HTML5 official YouTube beta player. Anyway some feature requests – ability to view video either in small, or wide window, as well as an option to choose video size in a player window, rather than inside the extension settings. Maybe make it like a button? (http://jonathanboom.tumblr.com/post/690834005/youtube-video-downloader)

Looking forward for future updates. Please fix the download link! :)

  9. The link is broken…

  10. My apologies, these extensions have made this website far more popular than I had anticipated, and I had to switch hosting companies yesterday to avoid going over my bandwidth limit. In the process of transfer I believe I broke a few things, but the link is working again now.

  11. without full screen? :s

  12. Hi.

I really like your extension, but can you make it so that when viewing videos on youtube.com, we see the video at the center and big, like youtube’s expanded view mode?

    Thanks.

  13. I cant see vids in full screen! Please help!

  14. i have a very strange problem with some videos – http://s51.radikal.ru/i134/1006/8c/2cc0a6211a09.png so, there are 2 copies of the same video. thank you for help

  15. Still, not all videos load and videos embedded in RSS only open in Flash.

This is one vid that is stuck:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76CdAphlyUg

  16. Now all embedded videos are broken, looks like Google doesn’t want you side-stepping all the ads they embed in their grotesque Flash player…

  17. Works great everywhere, except on the channel pages. Can you make it work there too? It’s a pain in the ass you always have to go to the video page, then back to the channel, to the next videos page, and so on.

  18. Thanks for a great extension! I love it. Unfortunately, after updating Matt Ball’s ClickToFlash extension (now version 1.2.1b), I find that YouTube videos often do not load in the HTML5 player. Instead, they appear as a ClickToFlash button, which when pressed, loads the YouTube Flash player. This happens on YouTube channels as well as YouTube videos embedded in other sites. Only videos directly searched-for and clicked on at YouTube.com still load in the HTML5 player. I find I can make the problem go away by disabling ClickToFlash, but then I get other unwanted Flash content loaded automatically. The two extensions used to coexist. Any suggestions?

  19. Hi, your extension is just awesome. I’m only asking a little thing: can you add a link back to the video on YouTube when the video is embedded on some pages? Actually, I’ve to fetch the URL viewing the page source, and that’s annoying :) This will make sharing the video a lot easier :)

    Thanks!

  20. It would be nice seeing a feature that only expands the video to the size of safari.

  21. I use Youtube5 1.2.4 and with some videos embedded i have a black rectangle instead of the video.

  22. Could you give an example of one? I’ll see if I can figure out what’s wrong.

  23. The extension is nice. But it doesn’t work for all videos. It hangs for me with this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QSgNM9yNjo

This happens on two different Macs (home and work) over different Internet connections.

  24. Hey man!

This is an absolutely amazing extension, however, for the last few days, its stopped working for me unfortunately.. The black extension player loads, but the video never loads – it just an endless circular beachball – http://img814.imageshack.us/img814/2058/screenshot20100722at203.png

Any ideas how to sort it out? I’ve tried uninstalling and re-installing, but no go.. Any help is much appreciated!

  25. hi,

i’m currently using Youtube5 1.2.4 and i don’t work. it worked some weeks ago (i tested it), and now i really want to use it, and it loads with no end… any youtube video do that…

i tried to uninstall, to empty temp files and nothing fixed it… thanks in advance for your future answer.

  26. and i leave the html5 program on youtube.

  27. I use Youtube5 1.2.4 but the videos don’t load

  28. The extension stopped working for me. It shows as if the player loading but it keeps loading forever without playing the video. Can you check on this please? Thanks.

  29. It’s not working for me, just loading and loading, but nothing shown

  30. Youtube5 1.2.4 used to play great but since a couple of days stopped work

  31. Youtube must’ve changed something, the extension is completely broken now.

  32. ^ +1. Videos will not load.

  33. Yeah unfortunately it looks like Youtube have changed something. Hope you can find a way to get this working again! Love this extension.

  34. What happened? None of the videos are loaded.

  35. @Jorge Blasio. yup doesn’t work for me neither.

  36. Agree with Jorge. Extension doesn’t work at all right now.

  37. Youtube5 hasn’t been working for a few days now. I’m not sure but i think Youtube might’ve changed the getvideo link. Hate when they change stuff for no real reason. Using flash on a mac sucks.

  38. to Jorge Blasio Extension doesnt load vids anymore for me.

  39. like jorge said, the extension doesn’t work at all now — probably because youtube changed something

  40. Youtube must’ve changed something cause this extension is broken. But another extension (not as good, no quality selector) FlashToHtml5 works fine.

  41. @Connor – I am facing the same issue as Philippe. The player loads, but all I see is the spinning progress indicator in the middle of a black rectangle (and the controls at the bottom).

I would also note that the Safari extension that adds a “Download Video” button to Youtube pages is also broken, so it seems like Youtube has changed something that is messing with Safari extensions.

  42. I second Jorge. Something got borked in the last few days

  43. It’s true, the extension doesn’t works since few days ago.

  44. I have just released an update to version 1.2.5 which fixes the issues everyone has been encountering with the changed video URL. Sorry the update took a while!

  45. aweseomawesomeawesome! thanks so much!

  46. Hi Connor, awesome extension! It is so nice not having to use flash for youtube, esp. on my MacBook.

A question though, since 1.2.5 sometimes I won’t get video controls on a few videos.

    An example http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/cxtp4/tilhowshipsarelaunched/

Press the “Play-like” button beneath TIL to have it shown in the page. This video does not give me any video controls.

    Thanks, Alexander

  47. I suspect that this extension will not work if you’ve joined YouTube’s official HTML5 Beta.

I installed the extension on Safari 5 for Mac OS X 10.6, and it worked great – until I joined YouTube’s beta, at which point Safari stopped loading any YouTube videos. Instead, it would try loading Flash video, but would never load anything.

Once I disabled the YouTube5 extension (but remained a YouTube HTML beta tester), HTML5 on YouTube worked once again!

So it’s either the Connor’s extension or YouTube’s official beta. I’ve chosen the latter.

  48. I have a similar problem to Nx-cold. The video autoplays invisibly, so I can hear it. Then another copy loads and I hear everything twice HELP ME!!
